Getting to Bako from Kuching

Bako National Park has no road access. The journey requires two stages: reaching Kampung Bako jetty by land, then crossing to the park by boat. Total travel time from Kuching city centre is approximately 1–1.5 hours.

Stage 1: Kuching to Kampung Bako Jetty (37 km)

By Public Bus (Sarawak Transport Company, Bus No. 1)

The cheapest option. Bus No. 1 departs from the Kuching Waterfront bus terminal, with stops near Satok market. The journey takes 45–60 minutes and costs approximately MYR 3.50 per person. Buses run roughly every 1–2 hours from 6:30 AM to 4:00 PM.

Note: The last bus back to Kuching leaves Kampung Bako jetty at approximately 5:30 PM. Check current schedules at the terminal as times can vary.

By Taxi or Grab (Ride-Hailing)

A one-way taxi from Kuching to Kampung Bako costs approximately MYR 40–60. Grab (the dominant ride-hailing app in Malaysia) is available in Kuching and offers a metered alternative. The journey takes 35–45 minutes. For the return journey, it is advisable to book a taxi in advance as Grab availability at the jetty can be limited.

By Car

Self-driving from Kuching: take the Federal Route 1 (Jalan Bako) northwards towards Damai. The park entrance road branches off at Kampung Bako. Parking is available at the jetty for approximately MYR 5–10 per day.

Stage 2: Kampung Bako Jetty to Park HQ (boat)

Shared longboat services run from Kampung Bako jetty to Bako National Park headquarters throughout the day. Boats typically depart when full (6–10 passengers) and the journey takes 15–20 minutes across open sea.

  • Cost: Approximately MYR 22–25 per person return (boat hire prices are set by the boatmen's association)
  • Operating hours: Roughly 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM (last return boat at approximately 5:30 PM)
  • Sea conditions: The crossing can be rough during bad weather. If seas are dangerous, the boat service may be suspended — always check weather forecasts and allow flexibility in your schedule.

Practical Tips

  • Book park accommodation well in advance (especially for weekends and school holidays)
  • Arrive at the jetty by 8:00 AM on busy days to ensure a boat
  • Bring MYR cash; card payments are not accepted at the jetty
  • Store valuables in a dry bag for the boat crossing
  • Day visitors: aim to depart Kuching no later than 9:00 AM to maximise time in the park
