Damai Beach Resort
Amenities
Beachfront resort on the Santubong peninsula, 35 km from Kuching. Ideal base for Bako day trips with direct beach access, pools, and Sarawak Cultural Village nearby.
Damai Beach Resort is the closest beach resort to Bako National Park — situated on the Santubong peninsula approximately 35 km from Kuching city and about 40 minutes by road from Kampung Bako jetty. The resort occupies a long stretch of South China Sea beachfront beneath the dramatic profile of Mount Santubong (810 m), giving guests both beach access and immediate proximity to one of Sarawak's better-known natural landmarks.
The accommodation comprises a mix of standard hotel rooms in the main building and stand-alone chalets distributed across the resort grounds. The chalets, set among coconut palms and casuarina trees, are the more atmospheric option — particularly those with sea-facing balconies. Rooms in the main building are larger and more conventionally hotel-like, with full air conditioning, private bathrooms, and the standard amenities of a four-star Sarawak beach property.
The location is the resort's defining feature. A morning boat transfer from Kampung Bako jetty to Bako National Park takes 30–40 minutes from Damai's beachfront pickup point. The resort can arrange transfers and day trips to the park, with the cost (typically MYR 110–140 round-trip per boat) shared between guests. The Sarawak Cultural Village, one of the better living-museum sites in Malaysia, is a five-minute walk along the beachfront. Mount Santubong itself is accessible via several hiking routes that depart from near the resort entrance.
Food and drink options on-site include the main restaurant (serving Malaysian, Western, and seafood options) and a beachfront bar. Dining is reasonably priced for a resort of this standard. Off-property dining is limited — the nearest village restaurants are 10 minutes by road in Kampung Buntal, where the fresh-seafood scene is genuinely worth seeking out (the famous Buntal Famous Pomfret restaurants are among Sarawak's better-known coastal seafood addresses).
For Bako visitors who do not want to stay in the park's basic forest lodges, Damai is the obvious base — a 40-minute commute each way to the boat, comfortable accommodation, real beds, hot showers, and a beach for decompression after a day of forest walking. The resort also functions well for travellers combining Bako with cultural activities at the Sarawak Cultural Village and a Mount Santubong climb. Book direct or via standard online travel agents; rates vary substantially by season and weekend versus weekday.
