Batik Boutique Hotel
Amenities
Stylish boutique hotel in Kuching's historic Old Town, decorated with traditional Sarawakian batik. Perfect for cultural immersion.
Batik Boutique Hotel is one of Kuching's better small heritage hotels — a 22-room property occupying a converted shophouse in the historic Padungan area, about 10 minutes' walk from the riverfront and 5 minutes from the cluster of restaurants and coffee houses that define the Carpenter Street neighbourhood. The hotel is designed around Sarawak's traditional textile heritage, with batik-themed décor in the rooms and common areas, exposed brick walls, and contemporary furnishings that respect the original shophouse architecture.
Rooms vary in size and configuration — the original building's shophouse layout means some rooms are long and narrow, others square, and a few have feature elements like exposed wooden beams or original shutters. All rooms are fully air-conditioned with modern bathrooms, ensuite showers, and Wi-Fi. The premium suites have larger windows and additional space; standard rooms are functional rather than spacious but well-finished.
The hotel's location in Padungan puts you in the middle of one of Kuching's better neighbourhoods for genuine local food. Within five minutes' walk you can find the city's best laksa Sarawak (Chong Choon Cafe, opening at 06:30), kolo mee for breakfast at multiple coffee shops, and the late-night Indian restaurants along Padungan Road for the post-10pm crowd. The Wayang Street temples and the heritage walking-tour route are 5 minutes away on foot.
For Bako National Park, the Batik is a 5-minute Grab ride from the bus terminal, where the red-line bus to Kampung Bako jetty departs. The full transit from the hotel to the park headquarters takes approximately 2 hours including the bus, the boat, and the walk. The hotel can arrange a private taxi to the jetty if you prefer (typically MYR 60–80 each way) — this saves perhaps 30 minutes versus public transport and is a reasonable option for a group splitting the cost.
Service at Batik is the property's strongest feature. The staff are well-trained, friendly, and genuinely helpful with Kuching logistics — they will give better restaurant recommendations than any guidebook, arrange transport, and store luggage on departure day if your flight is in the evening. Rates are mid-range for Kuching: more expensive than the budget hotels along Padungan Road, far cheaper than the international four-stars. The cocktail bar on the ground floor is a good destination in itself.
