Staying Inside Bako National Park

Spending a night inside Bako National Park is highly recommended. Early mornings and evenings — the golden hours for wildlife spotting — are accessible only to overnight visitors. The park is transformed after day-trippers depart; wildlife comes closer to the headquarters area, and the forest sounds of dusk and dawn are an experience in themselves.

All accommodation within the park is managed by the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) and must be booked in advance through the SFC online booking system or at their Kuching office.

Accommodation Types

Forest Lodges & Chalets

Bako's lodges and chalets offer the most comfortable overnight experience within the park. Facilities typically include beds (with mosquito nets), a fan or air conditioning, private or shared bathroom, and a small veranda. The most popular units overlook the forest canopy or the sea, providing memorable wildlife sightings from the doorstep.

Approximate prices: MYR 80–220 per room per night (subject to change; check current SFC rates)

Hostel Dormitories

For budget travellers, Bako's hostel dormitories provide basic but clean accommodation — bunk beds, shared bathrooms, and a communal area. This is the most popular option for independent travellers and backpackers.

Approximate prices: MYR 15–25 per person per night

Facilities at Park Headquarters

  • Cafeteria (basic Malay and Western meals, operating hours limited)
  • Small park shop (souvenirs, snacks, basic supplies)
  • Showers and toilet facilities
  • Electricity (limited hours in some units)
  • Wi-Fi (limited coverage; do not rely on mobile connectivity in the park)

Booking Tips

  • Book at least 2–3 weeks in advance for weekends and school holidays
  • The park frequently reaches full accommodation capacity; weekday visits are easier to book
  • Check the SFC website for current availability and pricing
  • Overnight visitors should arrive at the park before 3:00 PM to allow time to settle in before the last boat service

Staying in Kuching

If park accommodation is full or if you prefer more comfort, Kuching city offers a wide range of hotels at all price points. See our nearby hotels guide for options within easy reach of the Bako boat jetty.
