Kuching: Gateway to Sarawak's Wonders

Kuching, Sarawak's charming capital, makes an excellent base for exploring the region's extraordinary natural and cultural attractions. Bako National Park is just one of many outstanding destinations within day-trip distance of the city.

Santubong Peninsula

The Santubong peninsula, just 30 km north of Kuching, offers a combination of forested mountain trekking, coastal wetlands, and the famous Sarawak Cultural Village. Mount Santubong (810 m) is a demanding but rewarding climb. The Damai Beach area at the peninsula's tip has several resorts including the Damai Beach Resort.

Semenggoh Wildlife Centre

Semenggoh Nature Reserve, 24 km south of Kuching, is one of the best places in the world to watch semi-wild orangutans in a near-natural forest setting. Feeding times (typically 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM) offer reliable sightings. A Sarawak Forestry Corporation permit is required — book in advance.

Sarawak Cultural Village (Kampung Budaya Sarawak)

The award-winning Sarawak Cultural Village at Damai preserves the traditional longhouse architecture and crafts of Sarawak's major ethnic groups: Iban, Bidayuh, Orang Ulu, Penan, Malay, and Chinese. Daily cultural performances showcase traditional music, dance, and blowpipe demonstrations.

Kuching Waterfront & Old Town

Kuching's beautifully restored waterfront esplanade offers views across the Sarawak River to the Astana (Governor's Palace) and Fort Margherita. The nearby Old Town district contains well-preserved Chinese shophouses, the Sarawak Museum (one of the finest natural history museums in Southeast Asia), and excellent food options for local Sarawakian cuisine.

Combining Bako with Other Attractions

A popular itinerary combines a Bako day trip (morning boat, full afternoon in the park) with an early evening visit to Semenggoh for the 3:00 PM orangutan feeding. With a car or tour, both can be accomplished in a single day from Kuching.
