Bako's Climate: What to Expect

Bako National Park lies within Sarawak's equatorial zone, experiencing consistently warm temperatures (26–33°C) and high humidity year-round. There are two distinct seasons: a drier period from approximately March to October, and a wetter period influenced by the northeast monsoon from November to February.

Dry Season (March–October): Best for Trekking

The dry season offers the most reliable conditions for hiking. Trail surfaces are firmer, river crossings are lower, and the boat crossing from Kampung Bako jetty is generally calmer. This is the peak visitor period; book accommodation at least 2–3 weeks in advance.

Best months overall: March, April, May, September, October

Wet Season (November–February): Best for Wildlife

The northeast monsoon brings heavier rainfall, particularly in December and January. The boat crossing can be rough or occasionally cancelled in bad weather. However, the wet season has a significant advantage: wildlife activity around the park headquarters increases dramatically as animals seek shelter and food near settled areas. Proboscis monkey sightings near the HQ are particularly reliable in this period.

The forest is also at its most lush and green — spectacular for photography when it's not actively raining.

Month-by-Month Summary

  • January–February: Wet; rough seas possible. Excellent wildlife viewing at HQ.
  • March–May: Transitioning to dry; excellent all-round conditions.
  • June–August: Peak Malaysian school holidays; busiest period. Book ahead.
  • September–October: Quieter and drier; good all-round choice.
  • November: Start of wetter season; fewer crowds.
  • December: Wet; school holidays; can be busy at HQ despite weather.

Wildlife Seasons

Unlike temperate parks with distinct migration seasons, Bako's wildlife is present year-round. However:

  • Proboscis monkeys: Visible year-round; more reliable near HQ in the wet season
  • Bearded pigs: Active year-round; often seen on trails at dawn
  • Migrant birds: Various species pass through during October–April
  • Marine life: Bako's beaches sometimes see sea turtles nesting (June–August)
